EMF Protection 101: How To Manage Exposure For Better Health

What is EMF?

EMF stands for electromagnetic fields. This is the field that is produced during the acceleration of electric charges. To put this even more simply, it is what happens when electrically charged items and objects are being powered.

EMFs (or EM Fields as they are also known) are invisible and cannot be seen by the human eye. However, they are still measurable. They can be measured by the waves that are given off by an object. These waves are electromagnetic waves and could come in the form of light waves, radio waves, magnetic waves, x-ray waves, or electric waves.

To measure the EMF given off by an object, the peaks between each of the associated waves need to be measured. This measurement can then be organized on the electromagnetic spectrum. This will enable you to find out about the power of these EMFs and the radiation they give off.

Specifically, the wavelength and frequency these EMFs produce are measured to get an idea of the radiation levels. Some objects give off short wavelengths at a fast frequency. Others give off high wavelengths at shorter frequencies. The EMFs given off by all objects vary, meaning everything on this earth gives off varying levels of EMF.

EMFs have come under fire in modern years. The reason for this is because they are thought by some to be detrimental to our health. Some experts believe that EMF waves from certain objects can cause all kinds of health issues. The types of EMF that most often come under fire are:

  • “Dirty” electricity (these include fluorescent bulbs, solar panels, smart appliances, electrical wiring, and dimmer switches)
  • Radio frequency such as from cordless phones, Wifi, baby monitors, smartphones, and cell networks
  • Magnetic fields such as power meters, electric vehicles, powerlines, cell towers, and more
  • Electric fields such as everyday electrical appliances, power cords, extension cords, and more

All of these EMF types get criticized for their supposed risk to the health of human beings. You may be familiar with arguments very recently over the effect of 5G radio frequency on our health, with some people blaming the introduction of 5G for many illnesses.

Of course, these health concerns are widely disputed, but it remains a controversial topic. The fact is, EMF waves exist, and they are everywhere. So much so that it is nearly impossible to avoid them completely. But where do these EMF waves come from exactly? Keep on reading to find out more.

Where do EMFs come from?

Believe it or not, EMF waves occur naturally on earth and in the wider universe. In fact, one of the oldest forms of EMFs is older than the Earth itself. This is, of course, the sun!

The sun’s rays can create electric and magnetic fields, as well as radiation. However, from the sun we can see these EMFs. The EMFs from the sun create visible light. That is, sunlight is the EMF in question.

That being said, EMF does not just occur naturally. In fact, it is also present as a result of manmade events and objects. Today’s convenient modern way of living has given rise to countless manmade gadgets and gizmos.

Even before this, the invention of electricity, manmade light, and the telephone all had huge effects on the way we live. Each of these things listed contributes to EMF. From huge electric power lines to the lightbulbs in your home, all of these things create EMF.

As we mentioned in the previous section, there are many different types of EMF. Some are thought to be more detrimental to our health than others. These tend to be those that have slower frequencies but longer wavelengths. However, as we mentioned, many scientists dispute this.

You might be wondering where exactly these EMFs may be in your local area, or even in your home. As we mentioned, it is very difficult to avoid exposure to EMFs in this day and age, and when you see where exactly they are, you will understand why. Here is a non-exhaustive list of the different objects that give off EMFs:

  • Computers
  • Energy meters in the home (gas and electric)
  • Cellphones
  • Bluetooth devices (as well as those that are plugged into the electrics and connected to the wifi)
  • Microwave ovens
  • Wifi routers
  • Power lines
  • MRIs
  • X-rays
  • UV light

There are two types of EMF radiation listed above. These are ionizing and non-ionizing. Out of all the above, most of these types of EMF are what is known as non-ionizing radiation. This is thought to be the least harmful to humans. They are mild and send out low levels of radiation. As such, they are classed as being safe for use by humans.

Of course, these are disputed by some people, and this will be explored in more detail in the next section. Suffice to say that generally they are thought to be less harmful than ionizing radiation.

So, whilst most of these EMF sources are thought to be safe, that is not the case for two of those on our list. The latter two (UV light and X-rays) are ionizing radiation. These are known to be harmful to humans, especially when unprotected and in large doses. It is for this reason that we wear sunscreen, stay in the shade, and are only allowed a certain number of X-rays in our lives.

Now that you know all about EMF and where it comes from, it is time to explore what this means for humans. In the next section, we will be taking a look at the health worries that have been linked to EMF.

What can EMF exposure do to your body and mind?

As we have mentioned, EMF is commonplace in today’s world of convenience and gadgets. Some types of EMF are thought to be more harmful to our health than others. For example, ionizing radiation from the sun or X-rays can cause issues such as cancer and irreparable cell damage.

However, we are sure you are all well-versed in that and how to protect yourself from these types of EMF. What we are interested in in this section is exploring the supposed health issues associated with low levels of EMF. This is EMF that comes from everyday items and conveniences.

We want to preface this by stating that in regards to the health effects of EMF radiation, not much is known about it.

Generally, medical professionals are happy with the mild use of low-level EMFs and do not report huge side effects from this level of use. However, there have been studies that have suggested that EMFs can cause negative side effects and illnesses.

There is certainly more research to be done on the long-term effects of EMF exposure, but for now, we want to share some of the side effects that we have come across through our research.

Bear in mind that some of these have more supporting evidence than others. The list is not exhaustive by any means, nor does it mean that every person exposed to EMF will experience all or any of them. It is simply a list of conditions, symptoms, and side effects that we have encountered during research:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Other mental health symptoms relating to low mood, panic attacks, and anxious feelings
  • Irritability
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Sleep disturbances and more serious bouts of insomnia
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Restlessness
  • Feeling dizzy
  • Issues with memory
  • Dysesthesia (the name given to a painful itchy sensation in the body)
  • Loss of appetite (and weight loss as a result of this)
  • Fatigue
  • Stress
  • Joint pain
  • Inflammation
  • Hormonal issues
  • Fertility problems
  • Cancer
  • Asthma
  • Immunological issues
  • ….and countless other health-related issues

As scary as all of this sounds, it is important not to totally have a meltdown! Just to reiterate, exposure to low levels of EMF is thought to be fine. This list of possible health concerns related to EMF is not definitive, nor is it supported by masses of medically backed evidence. Sure, there have been studies done, but not the amount needed to be sure yet.

Some of the health risks are documented, whereas others do not have scientific research behind them. More research needs to be done on the effects of EMF, but for now, suffice to say that there are some valid concerns over the risks of long-term exposure to EMF.

How to avoid EMF exposure?

You may well be wondering if it is possible to avoid EMF exposure. As we have already explored, EMFs are everywhere, and it is almost impossible to avoid them completely. That being said, there are certain things you can do to help limit your exposure to them and the risk of getting ill.

It is vital that you remember that there is still much in the way of research to be done on EMF and the effect it has on us. As such, we cannot promise you that following this advice will totally protect you from the risks of EMF. However, these are all sensible things to do that are easy enough to implement immediately. Here are just a few:

  • Use the speakerphone setting or headphone when talking on the phone
  • Do not sleep with your cellphone under your pillow or next to your bed
  • Do not carry your phone in your pockets or bra
  • Unplug your wifi router at night
  • Don’t work on your laptop or use your phone whilst it is charging
  • Remove electronic from your bedroom
  • Reduce your use of ‘smart’ appliances
  • Don’t use your laptop on your lap
  • Make use of airplane mode on your cell phone and other devices where possible
  • Be careful in the sun because of UV EMFs
  • Use LED lighting and get rid of dimmer switches if you have them
  • Reduce overall use of electronics and try to cut down on cellphone and laptop usage

Crystals to help against EMF exposure

Many people hail the healing properties of crystals as one of the best ways of protecting yourself against harmful EMFs. Of course, we think that you should use them in conjunction with the advice we listed above for reducing your exposure to EMF.

However, we love crystals here at WishesnKisses and have some great recommendations for crystals to help protect yourself against EMFs. Our list of crystals is not exhaustive and there are many others that can be helpful, but these are the ones we felt were most helpful. Here are four of our top picks:

Black tourmaline

Black tourmaline is like your own personal bodyguard. Not only does it protect you from negative energy, but it can also absorb harmful EMFs. For this reason, this crystal is a must-have for anyone who comes into contact with EMFs in daily life (which is all of you reading this article!). It eliminates low vibrational energy and puts up a protective shield.

Shungite

Shungite is the most powerful crystal we have found for helping protect you against EMFs. it can actually neutralize harmful energy frequencies and help to attract good energy instead. This is a vital crystal for your home office or desk at work. Place it right next to your computer to feel its full effects.

Clear quartz

You should use clear quartz to boost the properties of your cleansing crystal. For example, if you use black tourmaline or shungite to soak up the EMF rays, clear quartz can boost this. As well as this, it is helpful for resting and purifying the energy after it has been detoxified. It re-energizes and brings clarity. Use it alongside pyrite (discussed below) to bring positive energy back to your space.

Pyrite

Known for its protective properties, pyrite is thought to work in a similar way to shungite. It can help provide a shield against negative energy. Use it alongside black tourmaline and shungite which will soak up existing EMFs, and pyrite will provide a shield against any more EMFs entering. As well as helping against EMF exposure, it can also attract new opportunities and abundance (even more reason to use it at work!).
